JUROR: DIANE BURKO

Diane Burko is a renowned artist and activist who makes us see in a very particular way: she brings together the seemingly disparate practices of art and science. Her work treats data like chiaroscuro, like POV, like a vanishing point: like an essential artistic methodology or material.
Diane Burko focuses on monumental geological phenomenon. Since 2006 her practice has been at the intersection of art, science and the environment, devoted to the urgent issues of climate change. Diane Burko is committed to public engagement. She makes herself available to wide audiences in an effort to convey her experiences and share her knowledge about the ways global warming impacts our planet. She uses both facts and images to make the invisible visual and visceral.
Please visit Diane Burko’s websites to learn more about her, watch videos, and see her work dianeburko.com. To read her resumé click here and to see a more detailed bio, click here.
THEME
Global Warming Is REAL. Something that has been on the top of our minds for quite some time. As scientific reports and photos document the changes in our earth’s atmosphere, we become sensitized to how global warming impacts us now and in the future. As global organizations such as 350.org and many others document the scientific facts, we begin to assimilate and personalize the information. A creative interpretation of your thoughts and feelings on this subject as expressed through art will be the heart of this exhibition. Go to 350.org and learn about the world’s largest grassroots environmental organization trying to save our planet. It may help articulate your thoughts with your art. There are no parameters to your expression, only that your artwork be current. The juror, Diane Burko, will make her selections based on interpretation of the Global Warming is REAL theme as well as the quality of the submitted artwork.
