Juror – ELLEN KOMENT
Ellen Koment is a recent recipient of the 2018 Gottlieb Foundation Artist Grant. Originally a New Yorker, a graduate of the Cooper Union Art School and UC Berkeley, she now lives and works in Santa Fe, NM. After a long career painting and exhibiting in the Bay Area, including inclusion in the exhibit “New Painters” at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Ellen Koment now works primarily with encaustic, and has been exhibiting in this medium for twenty years. She has been recently represented in three books and several magazines including an article on Encaustic and Creativity in “Encaustic in the 21st Century”, and a cover story in a recent publication of the Woven Tale Press.
She has long taught workshops in Encaustic painting, having developed a number of original techniques, and always encourages her students to find their own voice in this ancient and beautiful medium.
Theme
“No Creative Boundaries” is a no-theme exhibition, with a twist. We want a wonderful diverse exhibition with encaustic/wax artists delving into the creative process with the idea of “new territory”. It is sometimes easy to stay with what you know creatively and are comfortable with, whether it is technique or subject matter. It is also easy to look in your stockpile of art to find something for this show. If you are an EAI Member, you may also be wanting to enter the piece you have with us that is already hanging in the EAI Member Gallery. All of the above is good too, anything goes! However, we encourage you to enter something that is your latest work and even a special new work just for this exhibition.
Eligibility/Conditions
ALL WORK MUST BE FOR SALE This Exhibition is a National Exhibition, open to all encaustic/wax artists whether you are a member of the Encaustic Art Institute or not. However, any artist who is a member of the Encaustic Art Institute and resides in Canada or Mexico are also eligible to enter. Both Hot and Cold wax are eligible, the only requirement is that your piece contains an encaustic/wax element.
The application fee is $25 for EAI Members and $35 for non-members. Artist may enter up to three images per entry for review. Only (1) one piece per artist may be selected for the exhibition. Maximum size equivalent for 2-D artwork is 24” x 24”, for 3-D; 12” X 12” x 24”. EAI Members will be allowed to have their unsold work remain with EAI and hung or rotated with current work in the EAI Member’s Gallery. Otherwise, all artists will be responsible for their shipping return labels.
