The Gift, cold wax and oils on multimedia artboard, 30 x 22 inches

This piece was selected by the juror as the Second Place Winner.

Artist Statement:

We have been asked to describe how our painting fits the theme of Shifting Perspectives, I prefer to leave the interpretation open to the viewer, however, I will address some of my inner thoughts in creating this piece.

2020 was filled with division and major change in our country. Civil rights, politics, and race were some of the issues.

Depicted is a young black woman (faceless symbolizing all black women) possibly a slave. She is being handed a gift. Monochromatic other than her skin color and the red, symbolic of love and the blood that was shed by many to give her the gift of freedom and power.

A moment of contemplation, the sacrifices made in the past, and those that will continue for future generations.

Price: $8500.00 + $45 shipping fee
